First Christian Church: We are a community of believers who have been rescued and redeemed by the work of Jesus Christ. We gather together weekly to celebrate who God is, to grow in faith, to encourage each other, and to declare that knowing Jesus is better than anything else in this world. “And he [Jesus] gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers, 12 to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, 13 until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ, 14 so that we may no longer be children, tossed to and fro by the waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by human cunning, by craftiness in deceitful schemes. 15 Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ, 16 from whom the whole body, joined and held together by every joint with which it is equipped, when each part is working properly, makes the body grow so that it builds itself up in love.” -Ephesians 4.11-16
There is something both beautiful and challenging about these verses. The picture of the unity, maturity, conviction, and health of the church that is presented is wonderful. But those things are not accomplished by chance. Notice the word “equip” in verse 12 and again in verse 16. This word implies a movement towards wholeness or completion, and is here directed towards the saints- the believers that make up the church. This is the challenge, one of the roles of the church is to equip the body “for the work of the ministry.” What is the “work of the ministry?” It is the Great Commission. It is Jesus’ call to all believers to go and share the gospel and to make disciples! This is accomplished in many different ways, everything from going to a foreign country, to leading a bible study in your home, to meeting with someone one on one and sharing what Jesus has done in your life. But however this happens, it must include the bible, for it is only with a steady diet of God’s Word that we will grow in faith and steadfastness.
For this reason, we’re excited to offer a 10-week course/study that we’re calling “Catalyst”. A catalyst is an element that causes a reaction to take place or to speed up. Our goal with this group is that it promotes the “equipping of the saints” and the “work of the ministry.” We’ll strive to do this by focusing on how to study and understand the bible, and then applying this knowledge to spiritual growth, discipling, sharing, and teaching.
This study is open to everyone, but we are asking for commitment, participation, and authenticity. We are planning on meeting on Wednesday evenings at 6:30 at the HCC. We are planning on live-streaming these classes, but we encourage in person attendance. Please prayerfully consider your participation. We are excited about how God is working among us!
